South Africa Unveils Plan for Responsible AI

South Africa has introduced a new initiative designed to advance responsible artificial intelligence across government and society. The South African AI Association (SAAIA) launched Activate SA as part of the Western Cape AI Cluster (WCAIC). The program aims to support and grow the province’s artificial intelligence sector while engaging stakeholders on critical themes like policy, governance, and infrastructure investment.

Dr Nick Bradshaw, Chairman of the SAAIA, described the gathering as the annual meeting of the newly created WCAIC. He stated that the goal is to strengthen innovation and unlock investment opportunities in the global artificial intelligence market. Bradshaw noted that the United States, China, Europe, and the Middle East are already investing heavily to prepare their citizens and societies for this shift.

Activate SA serves as a multi-stakeholder vehicle to identify and achieve common objectives. The project seeks to position the Western Cape as a globally significant AI technology hub while serving as the nation’s first forum dedicated to responsible AI. The organization unites practitioners from the commercial, government, academic, startup, and NGO sectors to promote the advancement of responsible artificial intelligence.

Summit to Open at CTICC

The first edition of the Activate SA AI Summit begins on 25 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The summit is part of a flagship ecosystem support program run by the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT). The event is scheduled to run through 27 August.

Dr Bradshaw emphasized that sovereign AI is a central theme. This refers to the challenge nations face in developing, deploying, and governing AI systems independently. The WCAIC intends to showcase new infrastructure innovations and models that benefit everyone, rather than a select few.

The program also introduces a concept called Citizen AI. This involves everyday people using artificial intelligence to solve societal problems themselves. The association wants to match these individuals with early-stage support, capital, and computing services. Ultimately, the organizers aim to develop a provincial “success blueprint” that other regions can use across the country.

Activate SA 2026 is the nation’s first AI Summit dedicated to Responsible AI in Government and Society. This landmark AI event will explore how South Africa as a nation can harness AI to improve service delivery, education, and the everyday lives of its citizens, while establishing the policies, infrastructure, investments and frameworks needed for ethical AI adoption and economic growth. Convened by the SA AI Association from 25–27 August at CTICC Cape Town, Activate SA 2026 focuses on 10 core topics addressing the challenges and opportunities required to make Responsible AI accessible to all.
